“The stance between the stance” is a simple yet powerful drill designed to improve all of your stances. For this article, we’ll focus on enhancing your front stance using this method. This concept was shared with me a few years ago by Marty Cieplik Sensei, and it has significantly impacted my training.

How to Perform the Drill

  1. Start in a cat stance with most of your weight on your back leg.
  2. Tuck your hips under your pelvis.
  3. Ensure your hips are level and not tilted.
  4. Engage your lower abdominal muscles.
  5. Push your hips forward while sliding your front foot forward.
  6. Bring your back leg up into a cat stance position and repeat.

Key Points to Remember

  • Hip Position: Your starting cat stance can be performed with hips open or closed depending on what you’re working on. However, if your hips aren’t tucked, your upper body may lean forward as you move.
  • Level Hips: Keep your hips horizontally level as possible to eliminate unnecessary movements or wobbles.
  • Weight Distribution: Start with the majority of the your weight on your back leg and as you move into the end position, your weight will transfer to the front leg.
  • Core Engagement: Engage your lower abdominal muscles to maintain an upright posture while moving.
  • Initiate from the Hips: Focus on initiating each movement from your hips for smoother transitions and push from the ground with the back leg.
  • Versatility: This drill can also be performed moving backward, providing a comprehensive approach to stance training.

Even though this drill seems simple, it offers a challenging workout that strengthens your legs, core, and hips. It also helps refine your posture and movement, making your transitions between stances smoother and more controlled.
